Description

Hamish and Mirren live in a quiet farmhouse by a beautiful loch in Scotland. Quiet, that is, except for the talking sea urchin, singing sand, hungry fairies, sad bogle and grumpy witch!

This delightful collection of stories is a true Scottish children's classic. Moira Miller's characteristic wit and humour shine through, and Mairi Hedderwick's funny, charming illustrations bring gentle Hamish and his canny wife wonderfully to life for younger readers.

Reviews

'A children's tale told with wit and humour; illustrations by Mairi Hedderwick.'
-- Scots Magazine

'Deftly sly, delightfully wry, filled with acute observation and delicious nonsense, lyricism and galumph, these stories are as beguiling as the magic that meddles in our eponymous heroes' lives. Glorious for sharing, they read richly in the mind's eye, too, opening wide a welcoming door to folkloric Scotland: guaranteed wonder-full.'
-- Simon Puttock, The Guardian, 'What are the best Scottish children's books?'

'Written with panache and humour, Hamish and the Fairy Gifts is delightful entertainment.'
-- Childrens Books of the Year

'The seven to 10-year-old reader will simply love the adventures of Hamish and his friends. The illustrated stories in lovely Scottish surroundings rattle along with much humour.'
-- Greenock Telegraph

'A beautifully crafted book.'
-- Books for Keeps

'I think I'd like to meet Hamish. Traditional, fairy magic in short stories with a charming contemporary feel. I loved reading these, and I think you will too. Not just for children.'
-- Jill Marshall, Reading Matters (www.readingmatters.co.uk)

'I loved this book because it is funny. You can feel the wind and the rain and the cold coming out of the book. It is well written, for all ages. A good bedtime story book as well as reading on your own.'
-- Karis, age 10, Education Otherwise

Author

Moira Miller was born in Clydebank near Glasgow in January 1941 and grew up in the seaside town of Ayr. Moving to Glasgow, an administrative job with the BBC led to her having short stories broadcast on radio which she then expanded to create her first books. Over the next decade she had a succesful and prolific publishing career while visiting schools and libraries throughout Scotland spreading her passion for reading and story telling to a new generation. She died in a road accident in April 1990; her stories did not.

Mairi Hedderwick is best known for her delightful Katie Morag stories for younger children.
